In 1988, Bruce Carroll recorded the song "Sometimes Miracles Hide."
Most Christian music songs focus on simple, uplifting spiritual themes,
which seek to assure a broad acceptance within the greater evangelical
Christian music community.
"Sometimes Miracles Hide," however,
appeared take the exact opposite approach. Based on Bruce's personal
interactions with fans, the song explores the shock, fear, anger and
discouragement that millions of parents unexpectedly face after
discovering they are going to give birth to a child with a debilitating
birth defect. |
Word Records, Bruce's label at the time, didn't quite know how people would
respond. After all, there aren't a lot of radio singles that talk about
children with Down Syndrome. And yet, they took a risk and decided to
lead the release of the album by sending the song to radio. And the
response was absolutely overwhelming. In a matter of days,
virtually every Christian music radio station had added the song to
their playlists. Fueled by an equally overwhelming response from
listeners, "Sometimes Miracles Hide" rocketed to the top of the radio
charts, and was named "Song of the Year" at that year's Gospel Music
Association's Dove Awards.
But more importantly, "Sometimes
Miracles Hide" touched a huge group of people who had never before been
told that God had a fantastic plan for their disabled child a plan
that could never have been realized under "normal" circumstances. Bruce
had originally thought that the only people who could understand this
message in its fullest were parents who had discovered this truth on
their own. But what he has since realized is that the message of
"Sometimes Miracles Hide" is one that all parents can understand and
relate to, whether or not they have a child with a birth defect. It's a
message that gives hope to everyone that God cares about us, and can
see us through even the most difficult of unexpected circumstances.
'Sometimes Miracles Hide was a special song and I knew it the moment
it
was completed," said Bruce. "A songwriter is always looking for new ways to say old
truth. I love writing the truth I see in the life that is going on all
around me. I have learned that God is everywhere and we can see Him if
we are focused. Miracles is a true story song written about a couple
that I know. I saw them go through the struggles of a problem
pregnancy. I witnessed how they handled the bad news with faith and
dignity. I have also been blessed to see the beautiful little girl grow
into a beautiful young woman."
Two
decades later, "Sometimes Miracles Hide" lives on. The fact of the
matter is that there are still thousands of children born every year
with catastrophic birth defects and there are thousands of parents
who are facing uncertainties they never imagined they'd have to face.
For them, "Sometimes Miracles Hide" is as fresh and new as it was two
decades ago and has the same, profound, impact.
Unfortunately, Word has ceased to create the CD that contained the original version of "Sometimes Miracles Hide," making it almost impossible for people to obtain a copy of the song today. As a response to the continuing demand, Bruce decided to re-record the song, retaining everything that made it so special when it first was recorded while adding modern digital production and styling that make the new version in some ways even more memorable.
"I received so many letters about this
song," continued Bruce. "They ended up in the book 'Sometimes Miracles Hide.' As we approach 2009, the
10th anniversary of the book's release, I thought a new version and
re-release of both the book and the song was in order. The book will be out next year. I hope you enjoy the new clothes
this
song is wearing."
